Substance Misuse Program
The first substance misuse treatment model for adults with learning disabilities in Europe.
It is estimated that around 2% of the adult learning disabled population may have issues of varying degree with substances, predominantly alcohol, but also with illicit drugs and prescribed medication.
Sadly, these people are open to exploitation when illicit drugs are involved –often being used as drugs carriers which inevitably lead them into police custody. As there are no specialist services currently available for this group, they are often given prison sentences or placed in mainstream treatment where they are set up to fail as they cannot cognitively engage in the process.
Dorabella House is a five-bedded facility within Pfera Hall for the treatment of adults who have a learning disability and co-existing substance misuse issues. The treatment model has been designed to specifically manage the complex emotional and behavioural needs which are manifested by adults with learning disabilities.
